helping the turtle gardens dogs

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 8:54 pm

TG (as of tomorrow) will have a supply depot shed on the SAINTS property so if anyone has food or donated items for them, you can drop them here at their shed for the next person who is heading up north to take along with them. hopefully this will help get much needed supplies to make life a bit easier for our northern rescue friends.

stan keeps trying to talk me into moving to Burns Lake, not likely, it is too freaking cold and too freaking hard to get stuff up there! i am not stupid….it is much warmer and more convenient to rescue in the lower mainland.

saints welcomes Pashti VPOC

(very pissed off cat.) she is 14 yrs old and currently taking over the top of my dresser to boo’s dismay (this was boo’s spot!) so miz boo was crouched on top of my little tiny corner unit longingly gazing at her now occupied bed a mere 12 inches away. sigh.

i found a piece of particle board and slid it onto the corner shelf and over to the dresser and made a nice if somewhat smallish bed for boo. i would like to point out tho that my poor right arm had the crap whacked out of it by TWO pissed off and de-clawed cats who were none too grateful for my help. i think i might end up with actual bruises.

anyway, they both have a spot now and i am the one who by rights should be pissed off cuz i now have 2 cranky de-clawed cats, 2 cranky cat beds, 2 cranky cat food and water bowls AND a litter box on top of MY dresser. and i am not cranky so they should both just chill the heck out.

pashti’s owner moved into a “no pets” building and she went to live with their son. today he was moving and could not take the cat so mom and dad tried to get their building to let the cat stay for a few days til they sorted things out…no go. they went to one of the shelters to surrender her and were turned away due to her age. they then called CARES who couldn’t do anything today and were full anyway so they referred them to me because they were still driving around trying to find a place for the cat…. the last option was euth today.

oh well, i suppose she can beat the crap out of me in retaliation, she did have a tough day today.

welcome pashti…but i am calling you mrs. p… it is how i get even.

ok, bad cat..she just bit the visiting baby redneck to the bone…i made her eyes water while i cleaned it…cat bites are dangerous. sorry kels….mrs. p… you can beat the crap out of me but no biting visitors!

More silent auction stuff

Filed under: Uncategorized — Nicole @ 9:11 pm

Me again, prepare youselves for these, because you’ll be getting auction updates every week or so until the auction – Only 7 weeks away. Tickets will go on sale in the second week of April.
So we have put up a list of some of the items we have donated so far for the silent auction here.

So as Carol has mentioned before, this year’s vet bills are at an all-time high – $10 grand for the first 3 months. Saints is responsible for the veterinary care of 91 animals.
Carol, you may have just fallen off your chair at that number, yes, 91.
23 dogs, 25 cats,13 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs, 6 chickens, 2 roosters, 3 sheep, 2 goats, 2 cows, 3 horses, 1 llama, 2 pigs, plus the 10 animals that are in foster care.
Carol, have you gotten back on your chair? – to make you feel better, put it like this.
91 animals =$10,000 in 3 months in vet care = $1.22/day/animal in vet care.
Sounds better huh? We should do a commercial – for just the price of one cup of coffee a day you could sponsor a one-eyed Pug or how ’bout a cancer-ridden miracle dog (named Dexter) or Mr. “I can’t be neutered, may I hump your leg?” (that’s Jed, for those who haven’t had the pleasure of meeting him, see previous photos of Zoe meeting him).
hmmm, that has me thinking – i’m going to make a saints commercial, although i think many people would choose a cup of coffee over some of the crazy’s like Phoebe or Clyde. Tammy do you think if we made Phebers a tripod someone would sponsor her?

The fundraiser is needed to raise funds to help cover the vet bills – ones like:
Pugsy’s ulcerated/perforated eye removal
Raymond’s anal gland and angiosarcoma (cancer) removal
Jed’s antibiotics for his many infections
The antibiotics the Americats are often on
Endora’s latest UTI
Assurance that’s Nola’s masses are indeed benign (yay!)
Crazy Clyde’s antiseizure meds
Peepee pants: Darla and Carley’s urinalysis’
Spritely’s very expensive quadrisol
and for Millie’s kitty mastectomy and spay that is happening this Tuesday (please think good thoughts for her)

So we are needing to raise more money that ever this year, which means we need some great auction items to get some great bids.
We are on our way this the wonderful items already donated, but we are still looking for donated items for the silent auction. Suggested items are gift baskets, art work, wine, electronics, tickets to a show or theatre event, gift certificates (Restaurants, Starbucks, etc). Items should be new, or antique – no used items, please. If you provide an original retail receipt, a charitable tax receipt can be issued. A donor/donor organization’s name will appear in advertising for the event aswell as auction materials at the event. To donate an item or for further info on the evening, please contact Nicole at 604-862-9738 or Zoe at 604-729-8627 or you may email info@saintsrescue.ca

If you have collected any items for the fundraiser please email us at info@saintsrescue.ca as soon as you have them confirmed.

Thanks,

Nicole & Zoe

ok so who the hell is running jesse?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 6:32 pm

i came home for my dinner break and gave her a quick walk and she doesn’t want to walk, she wants to run and i don’t run…ever (except when some bad dog is in really big trouble), now i have to explain to her that she is free to race all over god’s green acres (or the back roads of mission) with whoever started her running (ahem….tammy?) but not with me. sheesh, i could die even attempting that crap.

and speaking of communicating with the saints, we had a visitor today who practices reikki, TTouch and animal communication…what was interesting was when in response to my explaining that she has a weight issue, petunia piped in and said she does not eat too much, she has a problem with her glands. i did not know this but i will ask dr. patrelli what she thinks. the first thing phoebe said to her was “no one ever listens to me” …ok that might be true but there is a real good reason for that!

animal communication is an interesting thing cuz to varying degrees, we all can do it. alot of the time, i know exactly what they are saying in context with what is happening at any given moment. take jed for example, it was pretty clear that it was not an accidental coincidence that he continually got between my mop and the puddles i was aiming for. he may be blind, but he can tell which direction i am moving in and he is very, very good at intercepting and placing himself right in the way. how much clearer could he say…hello, see me, i want you.

i know when the barn guys want into the barn, they sent their desperate vibes zinging right thru the air. now i am somewhat intuitive AND very good at reading body language AND i know what these guys want on a regular basis cuz they tell me over and over every single day. but telepathic i am not, but i believe others can be. and i do believe that animals are telepathic to a great extent which is why they never really developed a verbal language.

anyway, we had some great visitors today, and alot of really great help…so except for jesse trying to make road kill of me, it was a very good day.

My vehicle needs to go to the Dr

Filed under: Uncategorized — Mo @ 7:20 pm

I’ve pushed it as far as I dare… I was almost stuck way up in North Van. I can’t get out to SAINTS tomorrow & am hoping someone can pitch in & help Carol with the barn in the morning ?  I think it is supposed to be a nice day… : – )

How’s Dex ?

so it WAS a busy morning

i got the hay unloaded and didn’t lose percy out the gate so that was a good thing. the dogs were hysterical cuz they weren’t allowed out there and when they did convince someone to let them out enmass, they still hit a closed gate. chaos ensued, hysteria mounted and dog fight occured. that was a bad thing. i came flying back thru the gate right at them, the smart ones headed straight back to the house and even the not so smart ones got the hell out of my way. i think that was a good thing, they think that was a bad thing but since i run the joint, my kind of thinking wins and when i am mad, dogs better move their butts cuz dog fights piss me off big time. cleo has a sore ear and since she was the instigator, ask me if i care. anyway, i did clean it up for her but only cuz i was morally obligated.

albert and taffy went off into the wider blue yonder with their new very great family. andy and anita are going to have so much fun with those two and i know the dogs are going to have a blast too.

new incoming…. 2 new old, sick barn cats are arriving tomorrow (one is a 15 yr old cardiac cat and the other is a 12 yr old chronic URI, a barn is not a great home for either one of them, good thing the new owner wants them gone.)….. and a new 14 yr old retriever cross is arriving in a couple of weeks, her deceased owners grandson came for a tour of the place today, he is returning oversees in a month. both the cats and the dog are coming in due to unfortunate circumstances beyond their control but all of them are lucky that they did have good and responsible humans out there stepping up for them and helping them find safety. all animals should be so lucky.

it is quiet at work today, i wonder what the little buggers at home are up to right now?

more lex

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 7:06 am

lexi is starting to toddle around after me this morning, she walked from the bedroom to the kitchen and then to the cat room (the one that hardly any cats actually live in anymore!). she finally had a HUGE pee while i supported her a bit. that was starting to worry me yesterday…i can make fluids go in but i cannot make them come out again unless lexie is willing (or i insert a cathetor) and she was not willing til this morning. i really did not give her enough fluids yesterday…today i can pump her full. whew.

i have to go and get some hay for the barn before we let them all out (percy and his gate charging has changed how we do things around here) but i am afraid to leave her alone now that she is more mobile cuz she is going to try to follow me somehow and i don’t want her falling over in a not so great place as she tries to figure out where she should go to wait for me (like the outside cat run!) i think i will block off the dog door just in case.

well i better get moving, there is lot’s for me to do this morning before i leave for work and visitors are expected soon and we really need that hay.

i will try telling her to “stay” but i bet she doesn’t listen!

i wonder if karen is reconsidering the advisability of adopting our not so saintly goats????

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 7:32 pm

my back is wrecked from sleeping on the floor with lex last night. now that i know she is only temporarily incapacitated, i feel no need to join her again tonight. i am too old and wrecked myself for floor sleeping anymore, next purchase when we have a bit of extra cash is a little flat folding camp cot so i can park myself next to whomever needs parking next to.

my last bright idea was to use one of the big water troughs to feed hay to the barn guys. this was supposed to cut down on the messy spillage and waste. what ended up happening was a slide show in selfishness and ingenuity. first ellie-mae decided that if she stood with all four feet in the trough, she could get all the best hay, she took up the entire feed bin and effectively and passively blocked all possible interference….. percy, jeanette, 2 goats and a couple of sheep all stood by patiently waiting for her to leave. when she was done, pete decided that if he stood in the new feed trough, he also could eat undisturbed, except 2 cows, one goat and a couple of sheep all decided that they could easily snack right around him and they did. edith decided that pete was a dolt and wasting a perfect opportunity so she barrelled into the middle of the trough and head butted him in the knee and he left. there she stood with her head pointed downwards and horns at the ready, fully poised to knock the crap out of anyone who tried to close in. she is a very smart goat.

my nursing buddy and her daughter who came for a tour early in the week loved the place. she told me her favorite moment was when i spied edith stalking cody and yelled…”RUN CODY! GOAT!!!” and cody without a second thought got up and ran. cody is also a very smart girl, not only does she know her name but she understands 2 very important english words…run and goat.

lexie is very cute and pathetic tonight. and washington who has been quite ill for the past couple of days is very much better. here is hoping for a quiet and event free weekend.

lex is ok

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 10:37 am

not a stroke.. vestibular disease…she feels like she is on an out of control merry-go-round but she will eventually be fine. she will need hand feeding, syringe feeding for fluids, and carrying around for a bit…she is on ABX and steriods and anti-motion sickness meds…plus she doesn’t like being left alone very much so til she can walk again, she needs lots of company.
welcome to my scary roller coaster life.

kathy kelm is digging thru the cupboards and bugging me so i gotta go to work, quick.

not good

Filed under: Uncategorized — Carol @ 6:36 am

it is 24 hours post-stroke for lexie. the rapid eye movements have not stopped. she has a profound right sided head tilt. her left ear is stuck, straight up in the air, and i don’t think she can walk but i don’t know for sure because i am afraid to find out so i am not encouraging her to get out of bed.

have i said how fast life can just change? you can be up and happy to see me come home for dinner and then poof, mere minutes later, your brain blows up and it is over.

do you even know that you finally got me, that today is different than a month ago when we were still waiting for you to have the chance to love someone even more than me?

i am sorry lex that you had to spend your entire life waiting for humans just to see what a truly great dog was right before them, standing there, waiting to give them the gift that you just had to give.

i will take her to the vets today before i go to work, maybe they will say we can wait a bit longer for her to recover. i will wait if they say it is ok.
